Gazza ‘phoned Madeley at 3am’
|
Troubled footballer Paul Gascoigne has revealed he made phone calls to TV presenter Richard Madeley because he “felt lonely inside”. Now that’s what we call lonely…
Gazza, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in February, is interviewed on Richard and Judy’s New Position on Watch tonight. He tells Richard: “I would call you and then I’d start thinking someone was listening.”
He adds: “I’d call you because I wanted to see if I was making sense, which I knew I wasn’t. I felt so lonely inside, so I called people to see if they still loved us. When you called back, I didn’t take the call but at least I knew you cared for us.”
Richard Madeley and Paul Gascoigne – who’d have thought it, eh? Gazza has been doing interviews this week about his battle to beat his addictions, which he seems intent on putting behind him.
“I’ve had a bad 14 months and I want to have some fun,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “I’m enjoying life again. I’ll maybe come on a reality show.” Hmmm, but is a spell on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! really what he needs?
This week also saw former England manager Graham Taylor weighing in on the subject of Gazza’s excesses. "Paul Gascoigne is one of those players who has not been able to accept that there is no football,” he said. “It's been very, very hard and I suspect may continue to be hard for him. But I tell you what - he'll have my support."
With friends as sensible as Graham and Richard behind him, Gazza should be back in the game in no time…
